Liverpool's Virgil van Dyke won the December Player of the Year award, the first defender to win the prize in nearly six years.
The Dutchman did not know that, but the serious performance and excellent level he gave during the past month could beat his teammate Mohammed Salah in the vote.
Van Dyke said: "I did not know that the defender did not win the award throughout this period. I am really proud of this achievement."
"It is a great month for us and we hope we can continue," he added.
"There were some great games, I enjoyed everything in December, especially the Arsenal match. The win was exciting and fun for all our fans."
Last December, Van Dyck celebrated his first anniversary to announce his joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2017.
"I'm trying to get maximum confidence," Virgil concluded. "This is done by working every day and making sure you are a person with all the elements."
