US MPs criticize Turkey over its relationship with Russia

Leading Democratic and Republican members of the US House of Representatives have called on Turkey to abandon its planned purchase of Russia's S-400 missile defense system.

Democrat Elliott Angel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Wednesday: "Pleasing Russian President Vladimir Putin is unacceptable."

Members put forward a draft resolution urging Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to avoid any military relationship with Russia that could threaten the partnership of the United States and Turkey and the role of Ankara in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

US officials have been urging Turkey to cancel the S-400, otherwise risking its potential as a potential buyer of F-35 fighter jets manufactured by Lockheed Martin and as a partner in its production.

They say that Turkey's plans to buy the "S-400" will threaten the safety of these fighters, and they want Ankara to buy a US missile defense system instead of the Russian system.

Members of Congress used several means to persuade Ankara to cancel the deal with Moscow, including legislation that would prohibit the government from spending any money to hand over F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.
