UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) report that the influx of immigrants and refugees from Venezuela continues unabated, with 3.4 million migrants and refugees worldwide.

The two organizations said in a joint statement Friday that according to data from the national immigration authorities and other sources, the Latin American and Caribbean countries host an estimated 2.7 million Venezuelans, while the rest live in other regions.

The statement noted that the year 2018 saw the departure of up to 5 thousand people a day from Venezuela on average, in search of protection or a better life, explaining that Colombia hosts the largest number of immigrants and refugees from Venezuela by more than 1.1 million people, followed by Peru (506 thousand) and Chile (288,000), Ecuador (221,000), Argentina (130,000) and Brazil (96,000). Mexico and Central American and Caribbean countries also host large numbers of those departing.

The statement quoted Eduardo Stein, the Special Representative of UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Venezuelan migrants and refugees, as saying that despite the enormous solidarity of the countries of the region with these migrants and refugees, the figures underscore the pressure on host communities and the continued need for support from the international community. Bringing world attention to political developments within Venezuela.
