Sudan's transitional military junta announces thwarting a coup attempt in the country

Sudan's security and defense committee announced on Thursday evening that it had foiled a new coup attempt in Sudan.

In a brief statement on Sudanese television, the committee said it had foiled a failed coup attempt in Khartoum, without elaborating.

Sudan is undergoing significant changes in the power system after Sudan's former president, Omar al-Bashir, was sacked on April 11 after three decades of popular protests that have killed at least 90 people since the end of last year.

The transitional military junta, which currently holds power in Sudan, announced on June 12 that it had foiled two coup attempts in the country and arrested a group of officers involved in the movement.
