Pregnancy more than twice protects women from "sclerosis"

The Arabs today - pregnancy more than twice protects women from "sclerosis"

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A woman's pregnancy more than twice helps her to prevent sclerosis and may prevent her from getting sick, according to a medical study published in the digital version of the journal Neurology.

Researchers found the result after studying the data of 282 men and women whose diagnostic tests showed central nervous system inflammation. The researchers compared the cases of participants in this study with 542 men and women who are all healthy.

Their comparisons found that women who had had two or more pregnancies had a lower risk of developing MS. Women who had had five or more pregnancies had a lower risk of developing MS with a rate of one for every 20 cases in women who had never. At the level of men, the researchers did not notice any link between their fertility (number of children who live) and the beginning of the disease.

The incidence of MS has increased significantly in recent decades. "This is because women have become less willing to conceive and have children than before," said Anne Lewis Bonsonby of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia. It is not clear why pregnancy is prevented from the sclerosis or that it is minimally reduced. Some researchers assume that hormones play a role in this context, and are currently studying the possibility of using estrogen as a treatment for MS. Immunological changes in women during pregnancy are also likely to change the symptoms of MS and reduce the incidence of MS.

Multiple sclerosis affects neurons, the brain and spinal cord cells that carry information, stimulate thought and perception, and allow the brain to control the body. Some of these neurons protect a thick layer that helps nerve cells carry electrical signals. Multiple sclerosis is caused by progressive destruction of this layer throughout the brain and spinal cord. Like other immune diseases, MS affects women more than men, and is concentrated in the 20 to 45 age groups, but some forms of the disease are more common among older people.
