pakistan stresses ensuring the rights of its nationals working in the world cup projects

Islamabad has confirmed its keenness to ensure that Pakistani workers in the infrastructure projects of the World Cup 2022 in Qatar have the right rights, after repeated reports of abuse.

"We will ask our embassy and employment agencies to give our workers better conditions," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told AFP in Brussels on Monday.

Qureshi welcomed Qatar's plans to provide 100,000 work permits to his country's citizens, but stressed that the rights of World Cup workers must be respected.

Having embarked on a massive construction program to prepare for the World Cup, Qatar is under intense scrutiny from human rights and labor associations.

Earlier this year, Amnesty International warned that despite the "emerging reforms", Qatar was running out of time to get rid of the serious and widespread exploitation of the rights of thousands of foreign workers, mostly from South Asia, after reports of unpaid wages were paid The seizure of passports from employers and the work of some workers for 148 consecutive days.

Qatar has insisted on its commitment to reform labor laws, and since its choice to host the tournament it has imposed a minimum wage of 750 riyals ($ 206) and partially abolished the exit visa system, which requires workers to obtain permission from employers before leaving the country.

Qureshi welcomed the changes, but noted that Pakistan would press for more. "I think other things can be negotiated, such as health coverage and things like that," he said.

Kurshi is visiting Brussels as Pakistan, which is in dire straits, seeks foreign investment. The government was forced to announce a tight budget after securing a $ 6 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund.
