Experts warned that a common ingredient found in gum and mayonnaise can lead to fatal bowel cancer.

The researchers say that the titanium dioxide added to food, which appears as "E171" on product labels, can have a detrimental effect on normal intestinal bacteria.

A team from the University of Sydney conducted a study on mice and found that eating a bleach component could weaken some digestive functions.

The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, suggest that eating E171 can cause bowel inflammation and even cancer.

The use of titanium dioxide is common in large quantities, in more than 900 food products, as well as in toothpaste and sun protection products. Its use in food, medicine and clothing has increased significantly in the past decade, despite insufficient evidence of its safety.

"It has been well established that dietary composition has an effect on physiology and health, but the role of dietary complications is not well understood," said University of Sydney toxicologist Voich Krazanowski. "There is increasing evidence that continuous exposure to nanoparticles has an impact on the composition Microorganisms in the gut, and since the small intestine "guards" our health gate, any changes in its function have an impact on public health.

"The study provides a conclusive evidence that consumption of food containing E171 affects microorganisms in the intestines, as well as inflammation of the bowel, which can lead to colorectal cancer," he said.

The researchers explained that titanium dioxide, reacts with bacteria in the intestines and weakens some of its functions, leading to the development of diseases.
